Project 2025: Conservative's Death Blow to the LGBTQ+ Community

As mentioned before on this blog, Republicans hate the LGBTQ+ community, and their 2024 campaign has not stopped that barrage. The Republican plan for governance is Project 2025, created by the far-right Heritage Foundation (which as a 501(c)(4) shouldn’t even be allowed to meddle in political affairs.) They describe it as the outline that the next conservative administration to do “save the Republic,” This document continues the attacks against the LGBTQ+ community that Republicans have championed in the 2020s and are spearheading their campaigns with, and here are some of them.

As Republicans continue to champion transphobic policies, it’s no surprise that most of the attacks that Project 2025 is bringing on LGBTQ+ individuals are attacking the trans community, especially trans youth. One of the major policies is preventing trans students from using their preferred names and pronouns in classroom settings. Trans and non-binary youth have overwhelmingly said that using the correct name and pronouns has lowered their risk of self-harm and suicide. While also not explicitly mentioned in the document, Project 2025 would also likely continue in a ban on transgender students playing on the sports teams of their chosen gender, and instead making them play on other ones.

Trans attacks continue in the rest of the document, including barring trans people from being on Medicare or Medicaid and from serving in the Armed Forces. They also spread lies about trans people that are enumerated through society, such as the idea of “transgenderism” (which is fake) and that healthcare for trans youth is child abuse (which it is not), and that drag queens are unsafe (even when there are more priests found liable for sexual abuse than drag queens, because there are zero.) They also plan on making anything regarding sex discrimination to only involve biological sex, even when intersex and other identities fall into play.

One of Project 2025’s main goals when focusing on the LGBTQ+ community is to lower the LGBTQ+ community’s outreach. Project 2025 would end LGBTQ+ equality measures in Africa, expel HIV Positive people from serving in the Armed Forces, and remove any terms regarding diversity, gender inclusion, and sexual orientation from any federal document. Project 2025 will also end the separation of church and state (directly violating the First Amendment of the Constitution), which would lead to more homophobia through Christian fascism.

Project 2025 will also impact the LGBTQ+ community in normal ways: the lowering of abortion access and options for surrogacy impact some of the few ways that LGBTQ+ people can have children, making it harder for LGBTQ+ individuals to earn more pay as they plan to crack down on unions and lower overtime rules, and rollback food assistance programs (nearly 5% more LGBTQ+ adults experience food insecurity compared to cisgender and heterosexual adults.)

So, what can we do to stop this diabolical plan that would nearly eradicate LGBTQ+ people economically and socially? Vote for politicians who are not making Project 2025 their lifeblood on the campaign trail and what they are going to swear to do in office. Vote for progressive politicians who will support trans people and believe in the diversity that makes America what it is today.
